## In short

Portugal taxes a resident on worldwide income and credits tax paid abroad up to its own tax on that income and any treaty limit. We reconcile the same income and foreign tax across both returns under each country's rules on tax years, currency and classification; the credit depends on the treaty limits and the evidence of the foreign tax. US citizens are a clear case: they file in both countries, and their banks report under FATCA, so the two returns must be consistent.

What decides it:

- which country taxes each income under the tax treaty;
- the order in which the two returns are filed;
- the figures and the dates each return uses;
- for US citizens, what the banks report under FATCA.

## What you get

- Our advice on the Portuguese side of your income, signed by your adviser.
- The exchange with your adviser abroad, so that both returns report the same income and foreign tax under each country's rules, in the order they are filed.
- For US citizens, the FATCA reporting checked against both returns.
- A call with your adviser when your case needs it.

## How it works

1. After payment, you upload your documents in your portal, including your return abroad or its draft, and your adviser reads them and contacts your adviser abroad.
2. Your advice reaches your portal, signed by your adviser, once both sides have agreed the figures. If it shows further work, we tell you its fee first.

## The dates that matter

The Portuguese return for 2026 income is filed between 1 April and 30 June 2027. If the foreign tax to credit is still unknown at 30 June, tell the tax authority by that date that the amount is not yet determined. The deadline then runs to 31 December.

## What is not included

- The other country's return, which your adviser there prepares and files.
- Your Portuguese return, which is a separate service or included in Annual Tax Support.

- > I would be at a massive loss without the guidance, expertise, and support of Taxbordr's team. Filing taxes can never be truly easy, especially when it comes to filing in two countries (Portugal and US) as this navigation can be very complex for the less-experienced. I am beyond happy and thankful for the team's services in taking care of my filing obligations et al ... constant availability for enquiries, thorough, easy to manage, and I know I will entrust my tax filing needs etc. to the team here.

- > A really helpful, thoughtful, and flexible experience. Telmo worked with me on a complex cross-border case and went above and beyond what I expected in terms of depth, clarity, and responsiveness. The advice was practical, well-structured, and tailored to my situation, which made a complicated set of decisions much easier to navigate. I’d highly recommend working with him.

- > I had a US W-2 salary, stock options, and a California filing requirement that didn't disappear when I moved. Most Portuguese advisors I spoke to had no idea what a PFIC was or why my 1099-B mattered here. Telmo walked me through the US-Portugal treaty article by article and showed me which income was taxable where. That kind of depth is rare.

## Questions

### I am on Annual Tax Support. Do I need this?

Annual Tax Support already includes coordination with your adviser abroad. This project is for clients outside Annual Tax Support whose two returns must be reconciled in full.

### Is this only for US citizens?

The project is for anyone whose Portuguese and foreign returns must be reconciled in full. US citizens, who file in both countries because the US taxes its citizens, are one clear case. A pension or investment income that both countries tax is another.
