## In short

A Portuguese resident is taxed at 28% on net gains from shares and other securities, unless the gains are aggregated with other income. Where you are resident when you sell, how the sale is structured and when it happens can each change the tax, so we set out the alternatives before you agree terms.

What decides it:

- what you sell: shares, or the business itself;
- when you acquired it, and at what value;
- where you are tax resident in the year of the sale;
- whether a restructuring before the sale is under consideration.

## What you get

- The gain on the sale, and how it is taxed.
- The timing of the sale, and the effect of your residence.
- The alternatives open to you, with the tax consequences of each.
- A call with your adviser when your case needs it.

## How it works

## The dates that matter

## What is not included

- A restructuring before the sale, which is a separate project.

- Advice on the tax of another country, which stays with your adviser there.

## What clients say

- > Every other firm took five days to reply to an email and never picked up the phone. I sent Telmo a question about my RSU vesting schedule on a Thursday evening, had a reply Friday morning, and a 20-minute call booked for Monday. He said what he thought, not what I wanted to hear, and I needed that.

- > I had a US W-2 salary, stock options, and a California filing requirement that didn't disappear when I moved. Most Portuguese advisors I spoke to had no idea what a PFIC was or why my 1099-B mattered here. Telmo walked me through the US-Portugal treaty article by article and showed me which income was taxable where. That kind of depth is rare.
