Tax advice for companies

We advise companies in Portugal and abroad, and their owners, in English, on Portuguese corporate tax, VAT, staff in Portugal and how owners are paid.

Companies contact us about staff working from Portugal, a founder moving here or cross-border payments.

What decides your case

What does someone working from Portugal cost the company? Someone working here for your company is usually insured in Portuguese Social Security: 23.75% of pay for the employer on top of the employee's 11%. Their role can also create a permanent establishment, making part of the company's profit taxable here.

Does a founder's move make the company resident here? A company with its registered office or effective management in Portugal is resident here under Portuguese law, and a tax treaty can affect a dual-residence case. A resident with 25% or more of a low-taxed company abroad can also be taxed here on its profits.

Can the person you hire use IFICI? An employee you bring to Portugal may qualify for IFICI, a 20% rate on eligible pay for ten years, if they were not resident here in the previous five years. They register by 15 January of the year after becoming resident; on most routes the employer confirms the role and its own activity.

What is withheld on dividends and payments abroad? Dividends paid to an individual resident here are normally taxed at 28%, unless aggregated or exempt. A fee or a licence paid to a company abroad normally has 25% withheld; a treaty reduces or removes it with the treaty form and residence certificate, normally by the 20th of the following month.

What does the company itself pay in 2026? In 2026 a Portuguese company pays IRC at 19%, or 15% on the first €50,000 of taxable profit if it is small or medium-sized, plus a municipal surcharge of up to 1.5%. It registers for VAT before it trades.

What clients say

  • You deal directly with the person doing the analysis. No account managers, no ticket numbers. When my situation changed a year later, I emailed and got a straight answer from the same person who already knew my file.

  • Taxbordr’s entity-versus-freelancer analysis proved I didn’t need a Portuguese company. Staying as a sole trader with corrected recibos verdes (Portugal’s self-employment receipts) reduced avoidable corporate and compliance friction.
