Living in Portugal
If you live in Portugal with income or accounts abroad, we prepare your return each year, put past years right and advise you before the events that change your tax.

Most people who write to us from Portugal have a return with a foreign side: accounts or income abroad, sometimes never declared, or a pension taxed in two countries.
Each service here has a defined scope, in English or Portuguese, and we quote it from your request.
Our services
Your annual returnWe prepare your IRS return with your income from abroad, and file it once you approve it.
Annual Tax SupportWe file your return, review your position each year and deal with your letters and questions.
Starting as self-employedWe set out the regime to choose, how to register your activity and what you owe and file in your first year.
When your NHR endsIn your last or second-to-last NHR year, we set out what changes when your ten years end and the decisions to take before then.
Selling property in PortugalWe work out the gain on your sale, the costs that reduce it and the reinvestment conditions, with the figures for your return.
Two-country returns reconciledWe work with your adviser abroad so that your Portuguese and foreign returns are consistent, with our advice on the Portuguese side.
Inheritance and giftsWe set out the stamp duty on an inheritance or a gift, the exemptions that may apply and the obligations that follow.
What decides your case

What goes on your return from abroad? Income from abroad goes on your Portuguese return with relief for the tax paid abroad, and the treaty with the paying country decides where a pension is taxed.
What changes when your NHR ends? NHR lasts ten years, your return carries the NHR annex until it ends, and the decisions that change your tax afterwards come before the last year closes.
Does the date of a sale or a lump sum change its tax? The date of a sale, a pension lump sum or a change of residence can change its tax, so these decisions come before the year ends.
When is the return for 2026 filed? Under current law, the return for 2026 income is filed from 1 April to 30 June 2027, and 30 June does not move to the next working day.

What clients say
4.7 on Google from 43 reviewsI’ve really enjoyed working with Telmo, after being a bit daunted submitting my self employed tax returns in Portugal, it was a bit overwhelming learning a new system after coming from the Uk. Telmo has put my mind at ease, being both friendly and professional he has resolved many things for me, making my life in Portugal feel a lot easier and I look forward to continue working with him throughout the years. I’d highly recommend him.
I approached taxbordr to help sort out the tax at the my bank in Portugal as a foreigner. It wasn't an easy task - Carol and Telmo did everything by the book and then when there was no response, Carol had a plan B and a plan C - until it got sorted out. Always explaining the challenges but also taking the next step towards solution.

A pension, a rental abroad, and equity from a former employer. I had no idea how Portugal would treat any of it or what I had to declare. They went through it stream by stream, told me what belonged on Anexo J and what didn't, and handled the filing.
