Living abroad
If you live outside Portugal with a Portuguese pension, a rented home or other income here, we prepare your Portuguese return and set out what stays taxable here after you leave.

Most people who write to us from abroad have a Portuguese pension, a rented home or a sale here, and want to know what Portugal still taxes and who files the return.
Each service here has a defined scope, in English or Portuguese, and we quote it from your request.
Our services
Your annual returnWhile you live abroad, we prepare the return for your income from Portugal, such as rent, using your documents and the tax authority's pre-filled data, and file it once you approve it.
Leaving PortugalWe set out when your tax residence ends, how your exit year is taxed and what stays taxable in Portugal after you leave, working with your adviser in your new country.
Selling property in PortugalWe work out the gain on your sale, the costs that reduce it and the figures for your non-resident return.
Inheritance and giftsWe set out the stamp duty on an inheritance or a gift of assets in Portugal, the exemptions that may apply and the obligations that follow.
What decides your case

What does Portugal still tax after you leave? Rent from a Portuguese property is declared in a Portuguese return each year, and a sale is declared in the non-resident return for the year it takes place.
How is your exit year taxed? Portugal taxes your worldwide income until the day you leave and only your Portuguese income after it, and your return for that year reflects both periods.
Do the tax authority's letters follow you abroad? The tax authority's notices, and the deadlines they set, continue after you leave Portugal.
Can you use the former-residents regime if you come back? You may qualify for the former-residents regime if you have been away for five calendar years or more and your tax affairs are in order. Under current law, your residence in Portugal must start again by 31 December 2026.

What clients say
4.7 on Google from 43 reviewsI approached taxbordr to help sort out the tax at the my bank in Portugal as a foreigner. It wasn't an easy task - Carol and Telmo did everything by the book and then when there was no response, Carol had a plan B and a plan C - until it got sorted out. Always explaining the challenges but also taking the next step towards solution.
I had a difficult and extensive tax situation to handle and was searching for a tax advisor where I had no need to go to Lisbon several times or have constant meetings and calls, since my free time is very limited. …
